More Facts on North Carolina
The Native Americans
Before the arrival of the Europeans there were 7,000 Native Americans in the North Carolina region, they all spoke the same language. The Natives had lived there for hundreds of years before the Europeans came. Each village had thirty houses, each made out of grass and wood. The chief of the village had a house with several rooms were as the other Indians had only one room. The Indians got many diseases that the English had immunity to.

Religon

Religion
North Carolina's religion was Anglican because it was stated in the Royal Charter King Charles gave to the Lord Proprietors. It was hard to create many Church because it was hard to communicate to each town because of the terrain.
The church of England tried 22 times to get there Churches known in North Carolina. The people in Carolina weren’t big on religion. Religion wasn’t excepted because the church's would be supported by there tax money.
People resented the Church of England so much that there missions failed to get churches in North Carolina.

Famous People

Famous People
Explorers
Giovanni de Verranzano was the first human to see Cape fear, not even the Indians. After Giovanni de Verrazano discovered North Carolina Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon and a group of Spaniards made a temporary Colony in the mouth of Cape Fear. Herenado de Soto Climbed the mountain area of North Carolina. After that Hernado discovered the Mississippi.
The Lost Colony
In 1558 Raleigh was given permission to establish a colony in the new world After that Walter Raleigh put two people in command of two ships Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to find a good place for the colony. The two ships came back with two Indians. Three ships brought the people to there new home. At two months at sea they finally reached there colony. They started building at once. Raleigh finally founded the first English colony in 1558. It had 108 men in seven vessels. They built a fort called “Raleigh.”
After the birth of the colony started a lack of food. It was too late to plant and harvest. Fort Raleigh faced starvation and danger so some men left for England leaving 15 men behind.
Later Raleigh got a wealthy men to sponsor a new colony. He succeeded, after that 110 people signed up to go to the colony. Each got 500 acres to farm. The colony left in 1587 with 91 men ,17 women, and 9 boys.John White was the Governor. The new colony would also be called John white.
White be lived so much in the colony that he brought his daughter and her husband. His Daughter was the first European to give birth in the “new land”. The baby's name was Virgina Dare. The colony started to run out of supplies, so John White had to leave.
When John White arrived in England, England and Spain declared war. John White couldn’t leave for many years. In 1590 John finally returned to the Colony. When John returned he found the letters CROATOAN carved in a tree that meant they had moved to a near by Island. John unable to go to the island when a heavy storm hit. He was forced to go to England, he will never know what happened to his colony. Raleigh never visited the “new world”
The only permanent colony from England was Virgina. It was founded in 1650.

Economy

Economy
North Carolina's Economy revolved around Carolina's rivers and ports.
Before the eight Lords and Proprietors went to rule Carolina they had to hire someone to tell them what North Carolina was like and to help get people to go to start their economy, William Hilton of Barbados was hired. Hilton came back with wonderful tales to get the people to leave England. Hilton reported what was in the colony “as good tracts of land, dry, well wooded , pleasant and delightful as we have seen anywhere in the world… with abundance of deer and turkeys everywhere.” The Lord Proprietors had to advertise Hilton's words a lot in England to get people to go.
In 1660 England started to make rules for trade so the Parliament passed the Navigation Act of 1660. In this act the products made by the colonists could only be sold in England and the merchants buying the products got to pick there price. This made the people mad. Then they decided to pass a second law The Plantation Duty Act. In this law if you grew tobacco you would pay a tax to ship it. This made them even more mad.
In 1668 the Great Deed of Grant was passed. This would make renting land less difficult, just like Virgina’s policey. This was made to get more people to come. Finally in 1670 more colonists were coming, most of them going to the south.South Carolina attracted more people because they have more harbors and it was easier to ship. South Carolina grew more quickly than the north, so North Carolina had only 5,000 people.
Albermarle has every thing except a harbor, so people shipped things that needed to be shipped across the ocean to Virgina's harbors. Harbors where rare in North Carolina because the outer banks is hard to get through, you can get caught in a bank. The colonies major production was shipping, even if they didn’t have harbors. North Carolina also produced indigo, rice, pine, pine tar from forests (for the army), cotton, and tobacco. Soon slaves started farming so it was cheaper to produce.
More people where coming because of North Carolina's first town Bath. It was placed at the mouth of the Palico River. The towns started to spread all across North Carolina. As the towns where growing the Indians got mad because there land was downsized. Soon the Indians attacked and many towns were left in ruins. This marked the Tuscarora war. The Indians were defeated in 1713. Soon the colonists of Albermarle believed the government was only interested in making money not the people, so they took over the government and ran the county by them selves for a year.
Right before the Revolutionary War North Carolina became the fastest growing colony.People were coming from the north from Virgina. There were 100,000 people.

Goverment

Government
After England's Colony was lost it took England half a century to start new one. When it was lost it was proofed that life in the “new land” was to difficult.
In 1663 Charles the second gave a royal charter to eight of his favorite men and then sent them to rule Carolina. The Lord Proprietors had a few demands before they left. 1.“If the first colony will settle on the Charles River near Cape Fear, which seems to be desired, it shall be free for them so to do on the labor side entering the [south side]. If in any other part of the territory, then to choose either side, if by a river; we reserving to ourselves twenty thousand acres of land, to be bounded and laid out by our agents in each settlement, in such places as they shall see fit, and in such manner that the colony shall not be thereby incommoded or weakened; which we intend by our agents or assignees in due time to settle and plant, they submitting to the government of that colony.”This is one of eight demands.
When they arrived they Struggled to come up with a government to please the new settlers. They came up with the Fundamental Constitution of Carolina. “According to the Fundamental Constitution, the colony would be ran by a Governor. The Governor would appoint a Grand Council to give help and advice. In addition an elected Parliament or assembly would be made up of farmerswho owened at least 500 acres (200 hectares) of land. The members of the assembly paid the governors salary. This gave them a lot of power over the governor” Worth Richard 2004.
The county of Albermarel was made in 1668. Albermarel was the only county within Carolina that had a governor he was William Drummond. That governor was assistant to the governor of Carolina. Both tried to keep good trade with Virgina. Soon their was a governor for each county. Albermarle was considered a sports man Paradise.
Soon in 1689 the government of Carolina had two governors one south of Cape Fear and one north of Cape Fear.

Life

Life

People came to Colonial America to escape crime and buglers. Soon they learned that life would be much harder in the Colonies then they ever thought. The wilderness, the hard work, food, and also the way they live.

The first thing all the Europeans noticed was the wilderness , there was few towns. They weren’t use to earning their food, there wasn’t a shop across the street to get food you had to plant your own food and hunt your own food. There were many big families in the colonies, which is good because you needed a lot of people to help earn food and plant crops.

In colonial times if you were a married woman you would be called a “Goodwife” instead of Ms. This still meant they were respected to.This Doesn’t mean you didn’t work as hard as the other women. You would still care for the ill slaves and care for the children. You would do the laundry, make meals, care for the children. The unmarried women had more opportunity. They can be anything they wanted to be because they didn’t have to care for the children and slaves or make food and do laundry. Not many women weren't married because they came from England in families.

In big families the father was the one who made all the choices, he was the leader of the family.Women slaves were not allowed to be in politics, free black men and white men were the only people allowed in politics. A big thing in the colonies was horse racing, it was so big that some of the slaves masters allowed there slaves to ride too. Women were not allowed to play in any sports.
